Prof Mark E Smith

Professor Mark E. Smith is Vice-Chancellor of Lancaster University, having previously been Deputy Vice-Chancellor at Warwick University.  As well as being a physicist Mark has extensive experience from both business and higher education environments.

He is the current Chair of the Graduate Prospects and HECSU boards, as well as being a member of the HESA Board and HESA Audit Committee and the UniversitiesUK Research Policy and Long Term Strategy Network groups.

In January 2013 he became a board member of the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales and additionally serves on the HEFCW Research Innovation and Engagement Committee.  More recently Mark chaired the national review of A level content 2013-14, and was a member of the A level Content Advisory Board, he also became a member of the Strategic Advisory Network for the EPSRC, Trustee of the AQA Council and is a member of HEFCE’s Leadership, Governance and Management Committee.

In December 2014 Mark became a Trustee and Board Member of Jisc.  Although Mark holds many national positions he has a clear vision and ambition for the North West region and works closely with other education providers to help shape the region’s development.

As well as joining the LEP Board Mark also serves on the North West Regional Leaders Board.
