A new section of the A582 Golden Way has been widened into a dual-carriageway to improve journey times and boost capacity along a major route in South Ribble.

The southern section of Golden Way has been widened from Cop Lane to the Broad Oak roundabout, close to Booths supermarket.

The improvements are a part of the £434m Preston, South Ribble and Lancashire City Deal.

Work on this latest stretch of the A582 is almost complete, with only minor work still needed.

The A582 is one of Central Lancashire’s busiest roads. This work aims to encourage economic growth across the area and reduce delays on this key route through South Ribble, between Preston and the M65.

A section of the A582 was widened last year to two lanes in each direction from Cop Lane towards Preston.

As part of this latest work, there’s also a new toucan crossing at the Broad Oak Lane roundabout and a new shared use cycle/footway along Millbrook Way and Cop Lane, linking to the existing cycle facilities at Broad Oak Lane roundabout and Hurst Grange Park.

The City Deal is an agreement between Lancashire Enterprise Partnership and Preston City Council, South Ribble Borough Council and Lancashire County Council, along with central government and the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA).

County Councillor John Fillis, cabinet member for highways and transport, said: “This is yet another stage in the process to improve the road infrastructure around Preston and South Ribble to support future growth.

“It’s vital that we have the road network in place to support new homes being built, encourage new businesses and grow our economy.

“This is an exciting time. A lot of work is already taking place and more work is planned to transform the area in the coming years. This will benefit the economy in central Lancashire, as well as other parts of the county, through improved links to other major roads and the national motorway network.”

The overall project, part of the City Deal, will upgrade the whole of the A582 route into a dual carriageway between Cuerden and Preston city centre.

Work is currently ongoing to increase capacity on the Flensburg Way roundabout, next to the county council’s Household Waste Recycling Centre, which is best known for the Centurion Tank parked next to it. The improvement will create extra lanes and new traffic lights will be installed to handle the increased levels of traffic.

Work has also taken place to increase capacity on the Stanifield Lane roundabout.

A consultation was completed last year on widening the full length of the A582 from the M65 junction all the way into Preston, as well as the B5253 south to Longmeanygate. The responses to the consultation are currently being reviewed and report will be presented to the cabinet member for consideration in the summer.

These proposals also include significant investment to improve cycling infrastructure, with a 3m-wide shared cycle and footway from Stanifield Lane to Broadoak Roundabout, with off-road facilities into Preston.

The City Deal will deliver major road and transport infrastructure improvements, to bring economic growth to the area over the next decade. This includes creating more than 20,000 new jobs and the building of over 17,000 new homes.

It has been agreed between the Lancashire Enterprise Partnership (LEP) and Preston City Council, South Ribble Borough Council and Lancashire County Council, along with central government and the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA).
